This is the second installment in her complete collection of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos, following the first release (CCS42620), which featured the Piano Concerto No. 1 and the “Paganini Rhapsody.”\nFedorova’s performance of the Second Concerto—a live recording from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 2013 that has garnered nearly 35 million views on YouTube—is being re-recorded for CD for the first time since 2014 (PIANOCLASSICS). Piano Concerto No. 2 was the work that helped Rachmaninoff—who had fallen into a mental crisis following the harsh criticism of his Symphony No. 1—recover and achieve great success. Here, Fedrova’s piano playing, which conveys dynamic expression within a slightly leisurely tempo, intertwines with the sweeping, undulating orchestra to fully bring out the work’s charm. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 4, completed nine years after he left his homeland of Russia in 1917 and subsequently revised twice more, is a somewhat complex work in which the influence of composers such as Scriabin has been noted. Here, too, Fedrova’s technique and expressiveness—combining power and delicacy—come to life.
