Unaccompanied Cello by the Virtuoso Carminola\n\nFour years after his acclaimed recording of the “Unaccompanied Violin” for Deutsche Grammophon (three years at the time of recording), Giuliano Carminola has recorded the complete “Unaccompanied” Cello Suites for the ARCANA label. The arrangements are by Marco Serino, a friend of Carmignola’s who has been an active member of I Musici and has performed with him for over 20 years. Carmignola came across this score just before the global COVID-19 pandemic began; deeply impressed by the arrangement, he worked on this project during lockdown with the assistance of his cellist friend Mario Brunello.\nSince the tuning of the cello and violin differs by one octave and a fifth, this arrangement is transposed up by a fifth. Additionally, in No. 5, scordatura is used, lowering the fourth string by one semitone, just as on the cello. The Sixth Suite, believed to have been written for the five-string cello piccolo (with strings 2 through 5 tuned exactly one octave below the violin), is performed in its original key; only the passages that originally use the low C string are played one octave higher to maintain the flow of the music. As a result, the violin is able to convey a light and airy expression; while significantly different from the cello versions, this has given rise to a suite for unaccompanied cello that is beautifully sung with the unique, fluid expressiveness of the violin.
