Between 2006 and 2013 he recorded a complete Mozart symphony cycle (DACAPO), and from 2016 to 2019 a complete Beethoven cycle (NAXOS), both winning high praise from critics and audiences alike. The Beethoven set in particular was acclaimed across Europe and was named by the ICMA (International Classical Music Awards) as the finest of all the discs released during the Beethoven anniversary year. Recorded in the run-up to 2023, marking Fischer's 25th year as DCO principal conductor, this complete Brahms cycle is a notable release in which the challenges he sets himself are more daring still.\n\nThe approach is founded on a lean, transparent sound with sparing vibrato, brisk tempi and firmly articulated accents - essentially a HIP aesthetic - but bold phrasing and a skilful handling of the balance between winds and strings produce fresh sonorities at every turn. With the violins divided left and right and the bowing clearly delineated, the exchanges of phrases between first and second violins that occur so frequently in passages such as the finale of the First Symphony are strikingly effective. The better you know these scores, the more moments of surprise you will find in these thrilling performances.\n\nThe First Symphony maintains a swift pace throughout, yet Fischer shapes it with well-judged moments of hesitation at key points. The expressive handling of the calm second movement and the climax of the finale are particular highlights.\n\nIn the Second, the lustrous string sound set against the ringing brass makes a strong impression.
