Born in Aachen, Bretsch was an early child prodigy pianist. He later studied piano and composition in Berlin, and was eventually appointed general music director of the Berlin Court Opera (later the State Opera). He is especially familiar to record fans because of his recordings as early as the mid-1910s. Brech's works have a late Romantic appeal, with beautiful melodies and chromatic harmonies influenced by his teacher Engelbert Humperdinck. His operas and orchestral songs are among the best works he has written, and he has devoted much of his experience as an opera conductor to them. Six Songs for Children\" is an orchestration of six songs selected from a collection of 50 songs with piano accompaniment that he wrote for his own two children. The soprano Sonya Gornik from Saarland, Germany, provides the beautiful voice for these songs. She studied in Mainz and Graz and was an ensemble member of the Linz State Opera. She received much attention for her singing of Tosca and Madama Butterfly. After a maternity leave, she will be active as a Wagnerian singer from 2019.
