Praise was also heaped on the singers, particularly Nicola Alaimo, who sang the title role of Falstaff. The singing of the four women in key roles—including American-born Irene Perez and veteran Sarah Mingalt—was also noteworthy. And above all, the conducting by John Eliot Gardiner, who specializes in this work, was superb.
