After a brief stint at the court of Ferrara, he returned to Venice, where he was a musician at St. Mark's Church under the direction of Monteverdi, and in 1627 became music director of the chapel in Bergamo, where he died in 1630 during the onslaught of epidemic disease. The collections of works published shortly after his move to Bergamo all show a strong Gabrieli influence, but also a musical evolution typical of the 17th century, with the pursuit of a concertato style in which each part of the chorus is treated as a solo voice. Accademia d'Arcadia, an Italian group of old music that has systematically followed the composer's works, is an ensemble of nine soloists, violins, theorbo, and organ, with a brass ensemble of cornet (zinc) and large and small sackbuts (the predecessors of the trombone). With the help of the Uto-Fa-So Ensemble, we will slowly bring out the charm of the works through chamber music-like interpretation that preserves the independence of each singer, even in works with large orchestration. The pitch is 465 Hz, a little high for the Northern Italy of the time, and the 10-voiced Magnificat is a true example of the Post-Gabrieli generation, while the work with three voices and bass continuo is a complete turnaround, with a tight madrigale-like sound that is nothing short of magnificent. Following the earlier recording on the same label (A464), this is another fine recording of old music from the home of Italian music.
