Having performed with orchestras across Europe and Asia and honed his skills as an assistant to Gianluigi Germeti at venues such as La Scala in Milan, he has chosen works by Respighi—one of Italy’s greatest composers—for his first CD featuring non-concerto repertoire. A distinctive feature of “Pines of Rome” is that it assigns two flugelhorns, two baritone horns, and two euphoniums to the banda—an ensemble that typically uses trumpets and trombones today. This represents the original instrumentation specified by Respighi himself—soprano, tenor, bass cornos (brass instruments of the saxhorn family)—as originally intended. Rather than engaging in a direct dialogue with the orchestra, these instruments create a sound that seems to wander between reality and fantasy, making use of the diffusing sound characteristic of the saxhorn family. The album also includes “Impressions of Brazil,” which evokes the languor of the tropics, and “Belkis, Queen of Sheba,” a piece that has gained significant popularity in recent years.
