It is not widely known, however, that Dorati studied composition under Kodály in his native Hungary and left behind a considerable body of work, ranging from instrumental pieces to symphonies. The opera *The Chosen One*, included here, is Dorati’s only stage work; it features a text based on philosopher Martin Buber’s (1878–1965) *Elijah*, set to music that is rich and profound, reminiscent of Richard Strauss.\nThe world premiere in Kraków was conducted by Martin Fischer-Dieskau, son of the renowned singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Martin, a conductor and scholar, was also a beloved student of Drati and, as a keen interpreter of the work, served as the driving force behind this first recording. The title role of Elijah is sung by Polish-born Tomasz Konieczny.
