Antheil, who called himself a “Futurist pianist,” was a devotee of Beethoven and reportedly enjoyed performing Beethoven’s works before his own compositions during recitals; thus, this album features Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 7, composed during a period when the composer’s distinctive style was beginning to emerge. This sparkling, distinctive interpretation is uniquely Kopaczinska’s own. The other work at the heart of this album is Antheil’s own Violin Sonata No. 1. After moving to Europe and mingling with figures such as Picasso and Stravinsky in Paris during the “Roaring Twenties,” he was introduced by the poet Ezra Pound to his lover, the violinist Olga Radzi, and wrote this piece for her. It is a sophisticated and dynamic work that reflects the atmosphere of Paris at the time and shares affinities with composers such as Satie and Milhaud. After returning to his native America, he developed close friendships with Morton Feldman and John Cage, and this album also features their highly experimental works.
