However, in the 20th century, Da Ponte’s superb psychological portrayal in the libretto and Mozart’s diverse and rich music—composed with masterful use of ensemble—were reevaluated, and today it is frequently staged as one of the most popular operas.\nThis production in Florence, conducted by Zubin Mehta, was an orthodox interpretation that made full use of the orchestra’s sound and a leisurely tempo. The two pairs of lovers were portrayed by a fresh and well-matched cast of young singers, and veteran Thomas Hampson, in the role of Don Alfonso, masterfully led the younger performers with his exuberant acting and singing.
