With the intercession of his wife Proserpina, Pluto grants Orfeo’s request on the condition that he “must never look back until he has left the underworld”—but…\n\nIn 2017, to mark the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth, Gardiner launched a major project titled “Monteverdi450” and conducted a concert tour visiting 16 cities around the world from April through October 2017. Among these, he achieved the remarkable feat of performing the complete cycle of Monteverdi’s opera trilogy in nine cities: Bristol, Venice, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, and New York.\nGardiner, who made this concert tour a reality, is now widely known for his performances of Bach and Beethoven; however, Monteverdi is the composer who represents his musical roots, and the English Baroque Soloists were originally named the Monteverdi Orchestra.\nThis recording of *Orfeo* is taken from the second performance of the trilogy cycle, staged at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice—a city closely associated with Monteverdi—as part of that tour.
