His influence extended far beyond the Italian peninsula to countries south of the Alps, but his home base of Venice faced constant difficulties—from shifting trade routes to the threat of the Ottoman Empire—and was plagued by ongoing instability. Furthermore, the rapid pace of changing musical trends, typical of a major musical center, was a constant source of concern even for this great composer. From around the age of 50, Vivaldi shifted his strategy from publishing sheet music to selling one-of-a-kind autograph scores privately at high prices. He transcribed 12 “Concertos for Orchestra (Ripieno)” for foreign clients, which are now housed at the National Library of France in Paris and are therefore known as the “Paris Concerto Collection.” These works, which could be considered the distant origins of Bartók’s “Divertimento for Strings,” are a collection of masterpieces that, despite lacking solos, are exceptionally vivid thanks to Vivaldi’s characteristic meticulous and intricate musical phrasing—the more you listen, the more you’ll be captivated by their charm! It is a great pleasure to hear this collection—said to have been purchased by the Duke of Lorraine, who later became Holy Roman Emperor—in this latest, dynamically rich recording by a group of talented early-music performers gathered at Versailles. Although the string section is compact—3\/3\/2\/2\/1—with the addition of a harp, Baroque guitar, and the lute, and one cannot help but marvel anew at Vivaldi’s unparalleled artistry in weaving a fluid tapestry of sound—effortlessly shifting between major and minor keys—with just four parts.
