Stefana sets out for Siberia to follow Vasili, who has been captured and sent into exile there. Giordano composed the music, drawing on the tradition of verismo opera with his tense and gripping orchestration, incorporating Russian melodies performed by the chorus ( such as “Hymn to the Emperor” and “Barge Song on the Volga”). It premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1903. It is said that Gabriel Fauré, who saw a performance of this work in Paris in 1905, spoke highly of its music. In this production, director Roberto And shifts the setting from 19th-century Imperial Russia to 20th-century Soviet Russia, creating a unique atmosphere reminiscent of a bleak Siberian penal colony by projecting pre-filmed scenery and crowd footage onto the stage backdrop. The role of Stefana is sung by soprano Sonya Yoncheva, whose talent has been highly acclaimed in recent years. She delivers a magnificent performance as the passionate heroine.
