On this album, she delivers graceful performances of three modern and contemporary works. Shostakovich’s “Piano Concerto No. 1”—officially titled “Concerto for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra,” demands virtuosic solo techniques from the trumpet. By performing melodies quoted from a wide range of sources—including Shostakovich’s own works, other composers, and folk songs—the trumpet lends the piece a cynical yet comical flavor. Jolivet’s Concertino is a piece lasting about 10 minutes with a distinct jazz flavor, characterized by its lively rhythms. Here, too, the trumpet plays comical melodies, interrupting the dialogue between the piano and the orchestra. The pianist is Maria Rădută, who is of Austrian-Romanian origin. She is an up-and-coming artist who is passionately committed to collaborations between classical music and contemporary art and presents exciting concerts. The piano does not appear in Weinberg’s concerto; instead, the trumpet’s virtuosity showcases a musical world reminiscent of Shostakovich. Throughout the three pieces, German conductor Dirk Kaftan provides skillful support.
