This time, however, he has recorded with Justin Taylor, a French early music keyboardist who has made remarkable strides in recent years. Moreover, this collection of works by C.P.E. Bach—Bach’s second son, a unique genius in his own right—is a most welcome release. Inheriting his father’s interest in polyphonic music, his sensitive, impressionistic style—which transforms the ever-shifting nuances of the human heart into sound—exhibits a presence far ahead of its time; even in these mid-18th-century works, one can hear moments here and there that seem to anticipate the Romantic era. Frederick the Great, who employed him for many years yet continued to treat him coldly, was a music lover who loved to play the flute and had taken an interest in the fortepiano since its early days. Focusing on works composed by C.P.E. Bach at that court, Lazarević and Taylor fully bring out the charm of the instruments’ natural resonance while unfolding a duo brimming with musicality at every moment. It is a delight to experience the unique sonic landscape that can only be created by these two artists, rendered with the natural, authentic sound characteristic of ALPHA’s engineering.
