Peter Whelan, one of the founding members and artistic director of the Ensemble Marschuas, has recently been working closely with Mozart's music for bassoon, and has been releasing fresh new recordings every few years. This time, he has added strings to the ensemble and finally recorded Mozart's masterpiece concerto. After a multifaceted verification based on the history of instrument orders in Salzburg and testimonies from historical documents of the same period, the ensemble delivers a rich interpretation on instruments reproduced from the Grenzer model in Dresden, as the composer would have known it. Also included from existing recordings are the Serenade K. 388 in a minor key, unusual for a wind ensemble, and the unusual Duet Sonata K. 292, in which the bass part, often played on the cello, is interpreted on the keyboard (fortepiano) as a bass passage. It is also a pleasure to listen to the compositions from various perspectives to find out what kind of sounds Mozart spun through the bassoon instrument.
