Arrangements are underway for a political marriage between Francesca, the proud and beautiful daughter of the Polenta family, and Giovanni (Giancotto), the eldest son of the Malatesta family. The envoy from the Malatesta family who visits Francesca is Giancotto’s handsome younger brother, Paolo. Francesca falls in love with Paolo at first sight and, convinced he is her intended husband, is over the moon. However, Paolo was merely a decoy sent to ensure Francesca would marry Giancotto. Deceived and forced to become Giancotto’s wife, Francesca finds herself drawn once again to Paolo upon his triumphant return from battle, and the two cross the line. It was the youngest brother, Maratestino—who, as expected, was also in love with Francesca—who secretly informed Giancotto of their infidelity. Driven mad by jealousy, Giancotto burst into their secret meeting…\n\nThe tragic love story of Francesca of the Polenta family and Paolo of the Malatesta family, which appears in the “Inferno” section of Dante’s *Divine Comedy*, has served as the subject of numerous literary, musical, and artistic works. This production is based on one such work—D’Annunzio’s play *Francesca da Rimini*—with the libretto written by Tito Ricordi, the second-generation owner of the music publishing house Ricordi and a writer in his own right. Riccardo Zandonai composed the music, and the opera premiered in Turin in 1914.\nIn this production, director Christoph Loy dramatically portrays the conflict between brothers—a conflict that escalates to murder—over a single captivating woman, set against a simple stage backdrop. The role of Francesca is sung by Sarah Jakubiak, the popular soprano who sang the title role in Korngold’s opera *The Miracle of Heliane*, winner of the 2020 Opus Classic Award. Joining her as the three brothers vying for her affections are rising star tenor Jonathan Teterman (as Paolo); Ivan Inveraldi (as Giancotto), who visited Japan in 2017 and received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Iago in Verdi’s opera *Otello*; and Charles Workman (as Malatistino). Carlo Rizzi, who is active primarily in Italian opera, masterfully draws out a rich, resonant sound from the orchestra—a sound that, while rooted in the tradition of verismo opera, at times evokes Wagner.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Naxos","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595503100193,"sku":"4589538776794","price":4400.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538776794.jpg?v=1790481385","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4589538776794","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
