In 1961 he taught at the University of Michigan, and in 1970 he succeeded his teacher Victor Schlatter as organist at Grossmunster. In 1961, he was appointed organist of the Grossmünster, where he continued to enchant audiences with his brilliant performances until 1986. Vollenweider was especially well known for his improvisations, a skill he passed on to his son, the popular harpist Andreas Vollenweider. This album contains five of Bach's \"Trio Sonatas\" played on an organ built in 1960 by the Zurich organ workshop Metzler. The organ installed in the Grossmünster was a famous instrument that many organists of the time wanted to play, and Follenweider, who was organist of the Grossmünster from 1970, recorded all of J.S. Bach's organ works over a period of several years. The brilliant tone of the organ is fully utilized in this performance.
