Based on the style established by Lully, the King’s Master of Music at the court of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (1638–1715), operas that placed great emphasis on dance scenes enjoyed immense popularity in French theaters throughout the 18th century. These operas influenced other countries as models that stood on equal footing with the Italian art of singing; they also served as a venue for diverse musical experiments using orchestras, thereby playing a supporting role in the advancement of Classical music. An album chronicling the rise of French dance music in chronological order has been produced by a label based at Versailles, the residence of Louis XIV. What’s more, the conductor is Reinhard Goebel, who was responsible for the music in the film *The King Dances* (2000\/2001), which featured Lully and the Sun King as its protagonists! Gebel, who has accumulated a wealth of experience as a conductor (working with both period and modern instruments) even after the dissolution of his own ensemble, Musica Antica Köln, brings a distinctive sound all his own. Together with his liner notes (which include a Japanese translation for the domestic edition), this recording is poised to become an essential reference.
