Although the scheduled performances were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production went ahead as a performance without an audience on February 23, 2021. It was streamed live online and recorded.\nDirected by Rivermore, this new production rapidly shifts the setting from act to act—between the Mantua court, a semi-basement laundry, a seedy nightclub, and a subway platform—all while maintaining a seamless harmony between Verdi’s music and the libretto, offering a fresh take with meticulous attention to detail, right down to the characters’ mannerisms. The role of the Duke of Mantua was played by Javier Camarena, a Mexican singer widely acclaimed as a “phenomenal tenor” who made his Italian debut with this performance; Rigoletto was portrayed by Luca Sarsi, a leading Verdi baritone; and in the role of Gilda, Enkheda Kamani, an up-and-coming soprano from Albania who made a striking debut in this role at La Scala in 2019—a truly stellar lineup.
