The festival’s artistic director, Jochen Schönleber, has transposed the story to the present day and, by reinterpreting the accidental mix-up of suitcases as a deliberate swap, has crafted a comedy with even greater satirical edge. First performed in Venice in 1812 as the 20-year-old Rossini’s eighth opera, this work is a masterpiece distinguished by its fresh emotional depth and comedic flair. The six characters perform and sing with expressive freedom and ease, and the superb singing of Lorenzo Regazzo (in the role of Palmenione)—who is well-known to Japanese audiences from his several visits to Japan—shines in particular.
