In an extensive interview included in the commemorative album (LPH026) released to mark his 70th birthday, he stated, “From now on, within the limited time I have, I will focus only on works that I truly feel I should conduct.” It is therefore noteworthy that he has continued to record not only major works by composers such as Bach but also Renaissance a cappella pieces in recent years. In particular, it is a remarkable achievement that he has recorded the three late works of Carlo Gesualdo—a composer whose extraordinary sense of harmony continues to astonish not only his contemporaries but people to this day—on his independent label, Phi. Of the three collections of music—which he, suffering from extreme paranoia, had a music publisher bring a large printing press to his castle to print right before his eyes in 1611, two years before his death—the first that Helleweg tackled was the *Responsoria for Holy Week*. Although he had recorded only the Third Responsory in 1989, this new recording captures all three responsories and, with the addition of two other works of church music, forms an impressive two-disc set.
