A "pocket opera" of absurdist drama, born from a best-selling contemporary novel. Commemorative release for the Japan premiere! Based on Frank Pavlov's novel "The Brown Morning" (translated into Japanese by Otsuki Shoten), which sold over 2 million copies in France, Bruno Giner, a composer born in 1960, created "Charly" as a stage piece with a very small orchestra. With a total of six singers (or rather vocalists) and five instrumentalists, and a performance time of approximately 40 minutes, it is a condensed work in terms of both composition and time, and Giner has called it a "pocket opera. The aim was to be able to perform it lightly, as if carrying it in one's pocket, without the need for a large stage set. The setting is a town where one day a law is suddenly enacted that says "no pets except brown pets. It is an absurdist drama about a protagonist who is deprived of his freedom as he compromises with the unjust demands of the authorities. In terms of sound, the film is unique in that it incorporates a variety of elements such as whispers, slogans, pop melodies, and shouts in its expression, and it appears to have gained the support of young people in France. Bruno Giner studied under Brian Ferneyhough and Luis de Pablo.He creates in a variety of genres from chamber and orchestral works to electronic music, collaborates with world-class institutions such as IRCAM, and is involved in research on Erik Satie and Kurt Weill, as well as writings and activities to discover and introduce the works of Jewish composers who suffered persecution by the Nazis.
