Born into a modest family, he joined the choir at Reims Cathedral at the age of eight, where he received his musical education. He later entered a seminary, and in 1751, after receiving a formal clerical appointment, he became the choir’s music director. Although he served as director of the new music academy in Reims from 1749 onward, Arduan—who placed great importance on religious liturgy—resisted the growing demand for secular music and resigned from this position in 1773. This “Collection of Four-Part Unaccompanied Masses” is a collection of six masses published in 1772, which was widely circulated in pre-Revolutionary France. Although these works are rarely performed today, the St. Martin Chamber Choir, conducted by Timothy J.
