In this recording, Vivaldi’s works—primarily from his early period—are juxtaposed with those of the violinist Reali, who was three years his junior. He made his debut as a composer around the same time as Vivaldi and demonstrated exceptional talent. A publisher in distant Amsterdam released his collection of trio sonatas, titled *Sinfonie*, in 1709—two years before the publication of Vivaldi’s *The Spirit of Harmony*. The music of this composer, whose life remains largely shrouded in mystery, is filled with various devices reminiscent of Vivaldi’s early trial-and-error period—such as providing a solo part explicitly labeled “cello” within the trio ensemble to give it a dazzling showcase. The program’s structure, with “La Folia” by both composers placed at the beginning and end, is also exquisite. Led by the prodigious Langlois de Swart—who recently released a duo album with William Christie—the string instruments played by these master musicians are all originals by makers highly regarded before the 18th century.
