So, how will this turmoil unfold? ...\n\n*The Terrible Misunderstanding*, composed by Rossini at the age of 19 and his second opera buffa, was banned by the authorities despite its favorable reception at its 1811 premiere in Bologna. Although it was revived just once in 1825, it remained a “phantom work” that was not performed again until the latter half of the 20th century.\nThe composer’s youthful music is a highlight of this work, and the vocal ensembles in particular are magnificent, reminiscent of Rossini’s later works. The performance recorded here, from the 2018 Vilbert Rossini Music Festival, uses the critical edition of the score by the German Rossini Society and features the acting and singing of an outstanding cast of young singers against a simple stage setting.
