It is an excellent selection centered on his enigmatic “Quartet” from his very late period—one of the most distinctive works among his surviving compositions—and complemented by two well-chosen arranged movements. Since the composer did not specify an instrument for the keyboard part, it can be played on either a harpsichord or a fortepiano. Furthermore, although it is called a “quartet,” one part is assigned to each hand—left and right—on the keyboard, making it possible to perform the piece with just three musicians; this structure allows for interpretations that vary greatly depending on the performers’ discretion. It is also unique in that the viola is given a prominent role, with the violin absent. These three pieces were composed in the midst of the Classical period, when Mozart had already completed most of his piano concertos, and were influenced by C.P.E. Bach’s very late years, yet their style is closer to his early and middle periods; in the rondo, he deliberately chooses the harpsichord, engaging in exquisite interplay with the free and exuberant sounds created by the other three musicians. Although the two arranged works are based on original solo keyboard pieces, they sound so natural that one might think they were written from the start with the same instrumentation as this late work.
