Carlo Gesualdo, born into the nobility of the Kingdom of Naples and infamous for having his wife and her lover brutally murdered in a fit of rage over her infidelity during his first marriage, pursued a unique harmonic language with paranoid precision in his later years, arriving at a style that went far beyond the conventional norms of contemporary music. Before his death, he sank into extreme paranoia and distrust of others, shutting himself away in his castle; he even went so far as to summon the printer and his printing press to the castle to publish his *Fifth* and *Sixth* Collections of Madrigals and the *Responsories*. Although these three collections may seem to later audiences to be filled with distorted, dissonant harmonies, the *Madrigals, Book 5* featured on this album is known for having been among the first works whose appeal was recognized by Stravinsky in the 20th century, who even quoted it in his own compositions. Carefully deciphering the intricate texture of the five-part vocal arrangement—which, in addition to the four parts typically used in choral music, includes a fifth part that moves freely across various registers— and with a nuanced interpretation born of a thorough understanding of the lyrics, he is able to get to the heart of this unique harmonic sensibility through his astonishing musical prowess—all made possible because Helleweg, renowned for his unwavering commitment to harmony, tackled this work head-on with a small, elite ensemble. This is the birth of what can be called a definitive new masterpiece from the master of early music choral performance, who has declared, “For the rest of my life, I will engage only with pieces I truly believe are necessary.”\n\nThe Japanese edition includes a liner note with Japanese commentary and a Japanese translation of the lyrics by Tatsuo Shirasawa.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"PHI (φ)","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53374668964129,"sku":"4589538771546","price":2970.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4589538771546.jpg?v=1787632258","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4589538771546","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
