The protagonist of this album, Buffard, was the teacher of Quantz—who in turn was the flute teacher of Frederick the Great—and was active in the Dresden court orchestra, which Bach also held in high regard. Although his name is well-known in music history, opportunities to hear his works are rare. At a time when French music was exerting a major influence on German music, the impact of this musician—born in southern France and trained in the French style of flute playing—was immeasurable. This recording by Le Petit Trianon—a group that has been consistently releasing landmark recordings of a new era on the early music label Ricercar—is an excellent project that unravels the truth about this legendary composer through a brilliant performance! The virtuosity of these talented musicians, led by Olivier Lire, who performs on a model faithfully recreating the composer’s own instrument, is superb (with the bassoon playing a prominent role alongside the cello in the basso continuo), and from solo sonatas to concertos, this album offers an encounter with masterpieces of the late Baroque era through the multifaceted charm of the traverso.
