Additionally, it includes the first song from Mendelssohn’s *Song Without Words*, Book 2, a song titled “Swan Song”—which Schubert set to a poem by Johann Zen—are interspersed throughout, and the program concludes with a song composed by Fanny Mendelssohn to Heine’s “Swan Song.” Pregardien’s smooth vocals intertwine with Helmchen’s refined piano playing, revealing the uniquely Schubertian world of lyricism with profound depth, even within a restrained and understated expression.
Schubert’s only surviving string quintet, D. 956, was completed just two months before his death. Although he suffered from poor health in his final years, his creativity never waned, and his works continued to evolve. This work, too, is an ambitious composition: at a time when string quintets typically featured two violas, Schubert—like Boccherini—opted for two cellos to enrich the lower register. As a result, Schubert’s distinctive lyrical quality is brought to the fore against a stable sonic foundation. This performance, featuring the Tetzlaff siblings alongside conductor Dondalar and others, conveys the work’s emotional depth with remarkable balance. Even in the highly popular second movement, the dynamic intensity is perfectly measured, further highlighting a beauty that evokes a sense of the beyond.
Naxos Japan

Tracklisting:

1.Schwanengesang, D.957~Abschied
2.Schwanengesang, D.957~In der Ferne
3.Schwanengesang, D.957~Standchen
4.Schwanengesang, D.957~Fruhlingssehnsucht
5.Schwanengesang, D.957~Kriegers Ahnung
6.Schwanengesang, D.957~Liebesbotschaft
7.Schwanengesang, D.957~Aufenthalt
8.Lied Ohne Worte, Op. 30, No. 1
9.Schwanengesang, D.744
10.Schwanengesang, D.957~Das Fischermadchen
11.Schwanengesang, D.957~Am Meer
12.Schwanengesang, D.957~Die Stadt
13.Schwanengesang, D.957~Der Doppelganger
14.Schwanengesang, D.957~Ihr Bild
15.Schwanengesang, D.957~Der Atlas
16.Schwanenlied Opus 1 No. 1
1.String Quintet, D.956~I.
