Italian virtuoso Mario Brunello has recently taken a particular liking to playing a four-stringed cello piccolo (a small cello), which is tuned one octave lower than a violin. Playing this instrument—a reproduction based on an Amati model—Brunello recorded all six of Bach’s Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas originally composed for violin, creating a fresh sonic experience that generated significant buzz. Building on that momentum, his latest challenge is the “Sonatas for Violin and Obligato Harpsichord”—six works that are equally significant among Bach’s violin compositions. Also known as “Trio Sonatas for Duet,” these works feature a mandatory harpsichord part—rather than a continuo part performed by any instrument—with both the left- and right-hand parts fully notated; the right-hand part engages with the violin on an equal footing, making this effectively three-part music. A note on the cover of one of the surviving manuscript scores reads, “A viola da gamba may be added to the bass part,” and in accordance with this suggestion, Francesco Gallijoni alternates between the Baroque cello and the viola da gamba on this recording. Roberto Lorregian, a highly accomplished musician who has also built his career in the Italian early music scene, alternates between the harpsichord and the organ (sometimes playing both simultaneously depending on the movement), joining Brunello on the violin and Gallijoni on the bass to produce a richly expressive musical performance, delighting listeners with an interpretation that is consistently sincere while remaining full of variety.
