Throughout his life, he continued to explore his own unique sound, creating a new sonic language that was influenced by no one.
This album features works spanning a 40-year period from 1948 to 1988, illustrating the evolution of Dutilleux’s style. The 1948 Piano Sonata is the largest of Dutilleux’s piano works and one of the most frequently performed. While he adheres to traditional sonata form here, he would subsequently attempt to deliberately turn his back on that form. The 1953 piano version of *The Wolf* is the world’s first recording of this work. Commissioned by Laurent Petit’s dance company and premiered in Paris, this ballet score depicts the tragic love story of “The Wolf and the Beauty”; this recording features the original version, prior to its expansion into a richly colored orchestral work. The “Three Preludes” are short yet tension-filled works that Dutilleux called “a kind of study in timbre”; No. 1 is dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein, No. 2 to Claude Elfer, and No. 3 to Eugène Istomin—each dedicated to a pianist who was Dutilleux’s contemporary.
Jean-Pierre Armangeau (1943–) is a French pianist. He is highly regarded as a musicologist for his publications on composers such as Satie and Dutilleux, as well as Russian composer Edison Denisov, and for his critical biography of the painter Jean Dubuffet.
Naxos Japan

Tracklisting:

1.Piano Sonata~Allegro con moto
2.Piano Sonata~Lied: Assez lent - Un poco piu mosso
3.Piano Sonata~Choral et Variations
4.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: Allegro - A village square, on the edge of a forest
5.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: The gypsy girl's first dance: Moins vite (Mouvement de Polka)
6.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: Entrance of the wedding party
7.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: The gypsy girl's second dance: Gracioso
8.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: The gypsy girl's third dance: Moins vite (Mouvement de Polka)
9.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: The gypsy girl alone: Mouvement de Valse
10.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: Tempo I - Anime
11.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau I: Interlude
12.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau II: Giocoso - Piu lento e calmo - Un peu anime
13.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau II: Adage: Large - Poco animando
14.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau II: Vivace - Piu moderato - Piu vivo
15.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau II: Interlude: Molto vivace
16.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau III: Beauty and the wolf in the forest: Lent - Presto
17.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau III: The wolf's dying dance: Tres lent
18.Le Loup (The Wolf) (version for piano)~Tableau III: Curtain
19.3 Preludes~No. 1.
