He was active for a time at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, won Napoleon’s favor, and also made a name for himself at the imperial court. From 1813 onward, he served as director of the Naples Conservatory of Music, while continuing to enjoy great popularity at the Théâtre Italien in Paris until after Napoleon’s abdication. *Julietta and Romeo* is a masterpiece that was first performed at La Scala in Milan in 1796 and was subsequently staged frequently in Paris; it was also greatly loved by Napoleon. Based on an Italian libretto adapted from Shakespeare’s *Romeo and Juliet*, this opera is a landmark work that cannot be overlooked, serving as a precursor to the works of Vaccai and Bellini.\nThis masterpiece, which garnered rave reviews for the brilliant performances of the popular castrato Crescenzini and the female alto singer Gracini, is vividly recreated here by Franco Fagioli—one of today’s finest countertenors—and Adèle Charvet, whose rich voice has been making waves on the European scene. Accompanied by a period instrument orchestra gathered at Versailles, they vividly convey the charm of Zingarelli’s musical style, which swept the opera world on the eve of Rossini’s era.
