Known affectionately as “Josquin” in the local vernacular and recognized as one of the most important composers in the history of Italian music, 2021 marks the 500th anniversary of this master’s death. To commemorate this occasion, four ensembles based in Italy—each specializing in pre-Renaissance music—have come together for this project. Through the Milan-based Arcana label, they produced an album befitting this commemorative year, tracing Josquin’s career in Italy through his works. Under the baton of Paolo da Cor, known for his interpretations of 16th- and 17th-century polyphonic works ranging from Palestrina to Monteverdi, the polyphonic music—carefully selected while examining connections to the Sforza family of Milan, the Este family of Ferrara, and the Roman Curia, while exploring these connections. This carefully selected polyphonic music not only resonates with depth and richness in all-male a cappella performances but also occasionally features a rich, full-bodied sound accompanied by instruments. The interplay of bowed and plucked strings by the three members of La Reverdi—who have extensive experience with medieval music—is exquisite, and the engineering unique to Arcana shines through, precisely capturing each player’s tone in harmony with the spatial resonance.
