Set in the early 16th century following the Reformation, the story—which centers on a Lutheran peasant rebellion—was viewed as an indirect criticism of the political system in Germany at the time of its composition. Consequently, the Berlin premiere planned for 1935, to be conducted by Furtwängler, was banned by the Nazis.\nWhile still working on the libretto for this opera, Hindemith, at Furtwängler’s request, composed the symphony *The Painter Matisse* using material from the opera; this work premiered before the opera and was a huge success. However, the ban on the opera’s performance sparked the infamous “Hindemith Affair,” causing a sensation both in Germany and abroad.\n\nThe staging in this video is by Keith Warner, renowned for his theatrical opera productions, and features a massive statue of Christ on the cross placed on stage that changes its appearance as the story progresses.
