However, these three works vividly capture the evolution of his compositional style prior to his studies in Paris. No. 1, “Despair,” and No. 2 are masterpieces that exude a unique melancholy within their free-form structures, titled “Sonata-Fantasia.” While heavily influenced by French composers such as Fauré and Debussy, they incorporate Brazilian elements throughout.\nThe highlight is No. 3. The musical language bursts forth, foreshadowing Villa-Lobos’s later works! Perhaps due to its radical nature, No. 3 is rarely performed in concerts, but I strongly hope that this CD will lead to more opportunities for live performances. Even so, what an avant-garde violin sonata!\nPresident of the Japan Villa-Lobos Society \/ Conductor\nYusuke Kigomo\n\nVilla-Lobos’s three violin sonatas were composed when he was in his twenties and thirties.\nAt that time, Villa-Lobos had just returned from the Brazilian hinterlands, where he had traveled to collect folk songs. He had established a musical language that incorporated elements of Brazilian music into classical techniques and was beginning to gain recognition as an up-and-coming composer. That said, when he composed Sonata No. 1, he was still earning his living primarily as a cellist rather than as a composer, and his skills as a string player are evident in this piece, which is characterized by a melancholic atmosphere and lyricism. After thoroughly studying piano technique, he composed his Sonata No. 2 two years later. This work, in which the two instruments engage in a magnificent dialogue within a free form, was performed at a concert of his new works held in November 1915. His Sonata No. 3, published in 1920, shows the influence of Debussy but also features a more refined musical language that foreshadows his later series of “chores.”\nBardini, the violinist, is originally from Italy.
