Records indicate that he served as organist at the Málaga Cathedral for many years, but little else is known about him.\nThis “Stabat Mater” was premiered in 1854. The people of Málaga, who had endured a long period of instability—including the great yellow fever epidemic of 1803, the French invasion, and civil war—sought solace in the music performed regularly at the cathedral. Although this beautiful work had been completely forgotten since its premiere, it was revived in January 2020 by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra with the support of the “Fundación Lágrimas y Favores,” a foundation promoted by the renowned actor Antonio Banderas.\nThe performance featured some of Spain’s leading singers; among them, the renowned baritone Carlos Álvarez is said to have been deeply captivated by this piece.
