Since its premiere in 1936, many choreographers and ballet companies have worked on Romeo and Juliet, a brilliant ballet full of dramatic tension composed by Prokofiev, and many famous performances have been created. The Royal Ballet premiered the piece in 1965 with choreography by Kenneth MacMillan and art by Nicholas Georgiadis, and the combination of Fontaine and Nureyev was enormously popular. This recording of the performance features the Royal Ballet's popular young principals, Yasmin Nagdi and Matthew Ball, as the lead couple in June 2019. They bring a youthful, fresh breath of life to the traditional stage. It is also a pleasure to see Fusei Kaneko as Rosaline. Don't miss the bonus footage of behind-the-scenes scenes not usually seen, including a rehearsal of the sword fight between Romeo (Matthew Ball) and Tybalt (Gary Avis).
