Originally simple and lyrical, the \"romance\" eventually evolved into grandiose themes by Shostakovich and others, but never lost its intimacy. This album includes works on subjects as far removed from Russia as the Amazon, the Caucasus, Scotland, England, and Egypt. The joy of travel, romantic landscapes, love and loss, and life and death are some of the enduring themes covered in Hamish McLaren's plaintive voice. Hamish McLaren received singing instruction at the Royal Academy of Music in London and learned Russian while a student, which sparked his interest in Shostakovich's operas and Russian song; in 2018, he actually traveled to Russia, visiting score stores from St. Petersburg to Moscow and Irkutsk, Siberia Exploration. They acquired a number of rare sheet music, including two Shostakovich works that had never been recorded before, which they used for this recording.
