Pagliacci and Cavalleria rusticana are regarded as the supreme achievements of the genre, and although they are separate works they are frequently performed together. Here Robert Carsen reverses the usual order, beginning with Pagliacci and its commedia dell'arte play-within-a-play, then applying the same idea to Cavalleria rusticana, a fresh approach that gives the two works a single, coherent identity.\n\nOn the podium is the outstanding young conductor Lorenzo Viotti, appointed chief conductor of Dutch National Opera from the 2021\/22 season.
