It was premiered in Stuttgart, but was not well received, partly because it took too long to perform. Strauss revised \"Ariadne on Naxos\" and made it into an independent opera, which was premiered at the Vienna State Opera (then the Vienna Court Opera) in October 1916, and is usually performed in this version today. This live recording from October 2014 at the Vienna State Opera was conducted by Christian Thielemann, who has a strong attachment to Strauss's works. He spins a beautiful sound from the relatively small orchestra and brings together singers of great personality and ability, including Soylet Isokoski, Zofie Koch, and Daniela Farley. Also, the beautiful voice of Johan Botha in the role of tenor singer, who passed away suddenly in 2016, can be fully appreciated. Some of this recording is also available as Johan Botha: Aria Collection (C906171DR).
