Recognized as a leading figure in “Russian avant-garde music,” he was particularly praised in the 1920s as “a testament to the revolutionary spirit of the era,” and his aforementioned “The Steel Mill” gained worldwide recognition as a work embodying destructivism and the worship of machinery. However, after being expelled from the Union of Composers of the Soviet Union, he was not only deprived of his platform but also suffered severe persecution: in 1937, he was arrested and imprisoned on charges of “anti-Soviet propaganda” and forced to perform hard labor for eight years. Of the two works included on this album, the “Harpsichord Concerto” was written amid these difficult circumstances, influenced by the works of his mentor, Glier; while the orchestral sound evokes an atmosphere of sorrow, the harpsichord plays elegant music. Furthermore, the “Symphony No. 5” is his final major work, composed in 1965 following his mental rehabilitation.
