However, he never published a collection of his works during his lifetime, and the pieces that have been passed down to posterity through manuscript scores are shrouded in mystery. In particular, the pieces included in the Boan Manuscript—one of the most important historical sources—are often attributed simply to “Mr. Couperin,” making it impossible to identify them definitively as Louis’s compositions. Since he had two younger brothers, and both his father, Charles “Le Grand Couperin,” and his older brother, François (I), were keyboardists, it would not be surprising if their works were mixed in among them. Brice Saï, a rising star in the French music scene who has also recorded a collection of works by “Le Grand Couperin” featuring vocal and chamber music on the Ricercar label (RIC387)—has now released a new recording based on this premise. While keeping all three Couperin brothers in mind, he has organized the works attributed to “Couperin” in the Boan Manuscript into several suites. Using a renowned instrument modeled after a 17th-century clavecin from southern France—recreated by the contemporary master craftsman Émile Jovan, who enjoyed the trust of the great Leonhardt himself—the music is interpreted with deep, nuanced phrasing, note by note. One is left to wonder: whose music is this, exactly—which of the three brothers’?
