He composed approximately 1,000 works during his lifetime, many of which are choral pieces. This album features particularly rare “choral arrangements by Villa-Lobos of works ranging from Bach to the Romantic era.” These were written primarily for the “Choir of the Orfeao dos Professores” (Teachers’ Choir), which was active in Rio de Janeiro, and most were premiered between 1933 and 1935. While many of the original pieces are keyboard works, Villa-Lobos arranged them masterfully. Well-known melodies by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, and others have been reborn as vocal symphonies. All pieces are a cappella (unaccompanied), and with the exception of two, they are vocalises without lyrics, making them a delight to enjoy purely as music.
