After graduating from the science department of the former Third High School in 1949, he moved to Tokyo to seek guidance from Hōji Kiyose, aiming to become a composer. Although he became friends with Toru Takemitsu, who was a frequent visitor to Kiyose’s home at the time, he failed the entrance exam for the Tokyo University of the Arts due to tuberculosis and was forced to spend five years recuperating. Around that time, he also began writing haiku, demonstrating his talent in this field as well. After being discharged from the hospital, he released one work after another and eventually began teaching in the Composition Department of the Tokyo University of the Arts’ Faculty of Music in 1970.\nThis album features three of his works. In his “Symphony No. 1” from 1965, in which he strove to express an Eastern spirit, the grandiose sounds overwhelm the listener. Written more than 35 years later, “Symphony No. 2” serves as his own monologue. The sound returns to a more tonal style, with the piano and orchestra engaging in a series of dialogues as they surge toward the final climax.
