Around the same time, Fortunio, an innocent young man from the countryside, arrives at the André household as a notary’s apprentice and falls in love with Jacqueline at first sight...\n\nMessager’s *Fortunio*, which premiered at the Opéra-Comique in June 1907. Based on the play *The Candlestick* by Musset, a French Romantic poet and writer active in the first half of the 19th century, Messager—who was then serving as conductor and composer at the Opéra-Comique—composed light and beautiful music for the libretto. Although *Fortunio* became a popular production at the theater, it sank into obscurity after World War II. Fifty years later, as interest in reevaluating Messager grew, the work made a comeback to the Opéra-Comique’s repertoire during the 2009 season. In this performance, the beautiful heroine, Jacqueline, is portrayed by soprano Anne-Catherine Gillet, and the simple-hearted young man Fortunio by tenor Cyril Dubois, among a stellar cast of singers. The performance is further enhanced by the light and expansive playing of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Orchestra, guided by the masterful baton of Louis Langlé.
