He also authored the liner notes (in English only) for this release, offering insight into the context of the recordings. Menuhin, who had maintained a long-standing relationship with the composer since recording Elgar’s Violin Concerto in 1932, performs this 1945 version, which is a shorter version that was edited for radio broadcast at the time. Sargent’s performance of “Cocaine” is also a highlight. The Toscanini recording features the “Prelude and Allegro” from a 1940 performance with string virtuosos Mishakov, Cooley, and Miller.
