However, this woman is actually Madeleine...\n\n*The Coachman of Longjumeau*, which premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1836, is a comic opera set against the backdrop of the 18th century, during the reign of Louis XV when Rococo culture was in full bloom. It is a comic opera in which the protagonist, a country coachman, is persuaded to abandon his wife, rises to stardom as a singer in Paris, meets a noblewoman (who is actually his wife, Madeleine, having inherited a vast fortune from her aunt and become the belle of high society), proposes to her without realizing she is his wife, and, without realizing she is his wife, proposes to her, all while engaging in a romantic rivalry with the Marquis de Corsica, who is also infatuated with her—a racy comedy of manners. Along with the ballet *Giselle*, it became one of the representative works of the prolific Adan. This recording features a new production, completely reimagined by popular French comedian and stage director Michel Four (who also appears in this production as Rose), at the Opéra-Comique in Paris—the theater where the work premiered—more than 180 years later. The dazzling set and costumes (by Christian Lacroix) are stunning, and the role of the protagonist, Chappuis, was cast with American tenor Michael Spiers—who specializes in French repertoire—whose beautiful voice was met with thunderous applause from the Parisian audience.
