Not only did he compose the scores for some 250 films in Japan, but he also made his mark in Hollywood, earning an Academy Award nomination for his score for John Huston’s *The Creation* (1966). He was also involved in the management of numerous musical and cultural organizations and is known for his wide-ranging media activities, including serving as the planner and host of the television music program *A Concert Without a Title* for over 30 years starting in 1964. However, with the exception of a few well-known works, his own compositions have not been sufficiently introduced to the public. This album features the world premiere recordings of works such as “Symphonic Mood” and “Rumba Rhapsody”—a piece bursting with Latin rhythms that was later incorporated into “Symphonic Mood” and was never performed during the composer’s lifetime. Also included are the “Mandala Symphony”—inspired by Buddhist (Esoteric Buddhist) philosophy and a follow-up to the 1958 “Nirvana Symphony”—and “Bugaku,” one of his best-known works. While each piece has an exotic flavor at first listen, a closer listen reveals a sense of beauty unique to the Japanese.
