This piece—in which these elements perform in concert with a Western-style orchestra, a concept beyond imagination—reflected the trends in the music world at the time, the tastes of the audience, and Kozo Yamada’s own creative concerns, including his bitter realization that “I have come here without knowing the sounds native to Japan.” Furthermore, “Meiji Song” is a symphony that depicts events ranging from the era of national isolation to the arrival of the Black Ships, the Enlightenment, and the death of Emperor Meiji—and is likewise considered to have the acceptance of Western music as its central theme. “Mary Magdalene” is a descriptive piece born from the influence of Wagner and Richard Strauss—whose music Yamada encountered during his travels in Europe—and the imagery of modern dance, which deeply captivated him at the time. Premiered in 1918 at Carnegie Hall under Yamada’s own baton, this monumental work reportedly received rave reviews.
